As I sit at my desk to write this blog post, I spot my red stiletto tape holder through the corner of my eyes and I say to myself "Yesss!!!" It doesn’t get any more feminine than this! I am female, I am an entrepreneur and indeed this is my year to step out as an entrepreneur. I am in good company!
I am not insinuating that our male counterparts are not progressing either, they certainly are. But can we just focus on ourselves for once? As wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, employees and everything in between we give so much of ourselves to others, so it’s ok to have some “me” time while you enjoy this blog post sipping your fave beverage.
Female entrepreneurs have been around for a while; names like Oprah Winfrey, Sara Blakely, Chalene Johnson were popular several years ago. Attaining their level of success seemed out of reach and for what felt like a long time, female entrepreneurs seemed far and wide apart.
Today, female entrepreneurs are everywhere, they are your family, your friends, your sorority sisters, your colleagues, your fellow soccer mums, your fellow book club members, your Zumba or hot yoga buddies, everywhere you turn there is a woman slaying in her own area of expertise and guess what? There is room for you too but we will get to that in a short while.
I'll let you know why this is the year for you to let go of your inhibitions and begin your own entrepreneurial story. I am not going to tell you that it’s the easiest thing since shellac nail polish hit the scene, but here’s what I can tell you; the fulfillment you get from sharing your skills, knowledge and talent with the world is worth the effort that you put into it and let’s not forget the financial perks!
Have I convinced you? Are you thinking “yes," I want to become an entrepreneur but where am I supposed to find the time with all that I have going on?” Relax! we’ll get there but how about I give you ten reasons why you should consider it and we can deal with the time management issue in another post?
#1 Role models & mentors en masse
So you might be wondering how you would go about getting one of the big shots to mentor you? First, I would say never say never because miracles happen! While the miracle or chance meeting is still working its way out you can choose a few role models and follow them closely by reading their blogs, books, podcasts and articles they write. It's amazing how you feel you know someone so well because you follow them closely.
#2 Super easy entry
There is no entry fee or cover charge! All you need is to have your heart in it and be focused. There is no monopoly of any niche and therefore everyone gets a free shot and a fair chance. Even when you think your niche is saturated, please realize that there is room for everyone.
#3 Opportunities to create awesome things
Entrepreneurs create opportunities for themselves by providing solutions. Creating a solution that solves a pain point is everything, then providing quality service that exceeds the perceived value (aka money) that your customers attribute to it is the cherry on top!
One thing I admire about bringing entrepreneurs in the same niche together is how these solutions are presented based on each person’s gifts. It is just beautiful!
#4 Not a pro, No problem
I say this very cautiously because I don't want this to be misconstrued or taken that its ok to be mediocre. This couldn't be further from the truth. What I mean by this is that you don’t need to be a pro or know absolutely everything there is to know before you become an entrepreneur. I believe that you get a lot of training on the job, it is a continuous learning process and the more you develop yourself the better you get.
#5 Cool cash
What’s better than doing what you love and getting paid for it? I can’t think of too many things. While your focus shouldn't be a get-rich-quick-scheme, rather it should be to provide value. Eventually the perceived value that you provide would earn you some cool cash. Focus on being genuinely helpful and authentic and the cash will chase after you.
#6 Tools and apps
We live in the age where “there is an app for it” is not an understatement. When it comes to having a strong entrepreneur game, productivity tools and apps come a dime a dozen. There are so many tools and apps out there that will help you manage your business at the touch of a button. These tools allow you to automate repetitive tasks and processes.
#7 Online space
The internet is your Business BFF! You can do so much in the online space that there’s really no reason to miss out on this opportunity. Most businesses have an online presence and that includes you too.
#8 Social Media
Sharing cute pictures of your children and pets is super cute, but there are opportunities to use social media beyond that by connecting with your target audience and networking with other entrepreneurs. Social media also helps to "humanize" your business.
You don’t have to do it all on your own, you can delegate tasks to a virtual assistant (VA). There are tons of websites with VAs offering their services at reasonable rates.
The most important piece of this puzzle is YOU! Without you in it, the other nine reasons above are as good as nothing. You are unique, and what makes it so exciting is knowing that nobody can do it better than you.
First you have to get your mindset right and connect with why you want to become an entrepreneur and then you will need to determine what you like to do and what you do really well. Next is to determine how can you use your skill to create solutions for others.
Easy peasy? well stay tuned for my post on Value Proposition.
So what’s it going to be? There are still approximately 225 days left in 2016 for you to get on board.
